- Effects of Long-term Treatment with Prazosin on Left Ventricular Diastolic Function in Mild to Moderate Hypertension (4)

Patients took their study medications on the day of the treatment echocardiogram. All echocardiograms were axled and read blindly in random sequence by a single observer (C.A.). In our laboratory, intraobserver variability in the measurement of left ventricular mass has been established at less than 7 percent; only changes of 10 percent or more thus have been considered as attributable to the effect of the drug.
Radionuclide Ventriculography
Indices of left ventricular diastolic (peak filling rate [PFR]; first third filling fraction [FFV6]; and time to peak filling rate [tPFR]) and systolic (ejection fraction [EF] and peak ejection rate [PER]) (unction were derived by radionuclide ventriculography at equilibrium, after in vivo red blood cell labeling with 20 mCi of technetium 99m. After 30 min of supine rest, imaging was accomplished with a large-field gamma camera with a high-sensitivity parallel-hole collimator. A left anterior oblique projection (30° to 40°) oriented for the best visualization of the left ventricle was used. The data were digitized into a 64 by 64 pixel matrix formatted into 24 frames spanning the average cardiac cycle. PFR and PER were also corrected for the corresponding heart rate.
