Effects of Long-term Treatment with Prazosin on Left Ventricular Diastolic Function in Mild to Moderate Hypertension (3)Exercise Stress Resting
The stress testing consisted of a maximal multistage exercise in the sitting position on a bicycle ergometer. The starting load of 50 W was increased by 20 W every 2 min until physical exhaustion was reached. Blood pressure, heart rate, and 12-lead ECG were recorded at rest and each minute during exercise and recovery.
Echocardiography
Parameters of cardiac morphology’ were measured as recommended by the American Society of Echocardiography; left ventricular volumes were calculated according to the formula of Teichholz et al. A second set of end-diastolic measurements was made according to the Penn Convention to calculate the left ventricular mass using the formula of Devereux and Reichek. The following parameters were obtained: end-systolic and end-diastolic diameters and volumes, interventricular septum and posterior wall thickness, left ventricular mass, cross-sectional area, and relative diastolic wall thickness. The relevant dimensions of three cardiac cycles were averaged to form the basis of the mass calculation. Baseline and treatment records were obtained during held expiration in the same body and transducer position.
